PC giant Hewlett-Packard is reportedly planning to unveil its first Android-based tablet.
Sources familiar with the exploration told ReadWrite that HP’s first Android device will be a high-end tablet powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 chip, and it could be announced soon.
NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 was launched duing the 2013 International CES held at Nevada, Las Vegas. Though it features some impressive specs, only a few devices have so far adopted the technology.
HP refused to comment on its plans of releasing an Android-based tablet, but the company has reportedly been toying with the idea since 2010.
Sources also say HP is currently exploring the launch of an Android-powered smartphone, but earlier comments from CEO Meg Whitman indicate HP will not offer a mobile phone this year.
If the plans push through, HP might just be able to regain ground in mobile computing, currently dominated by Apple, Samsung, HTC, and Motorola — among others. It’s also going to be a big win for Google, which adds another powerful partner to the Android family, the article notes.
